Why do colors fade?

Hello, I just purchased a true perc for my tank and the poor guys colors are fading on his side. Especially the black is fading badly. After his first feeding he got his color back for about ten minutes but now he's fading again. Is there something I can do about this? Is there something wrong with him? My water parameters are good. Could it be the lighting or is it his diet? I really don't understand what's wrong. Thank you for your help.

if your water parameters are good the only think i wonder is if he is alone.. alot of times they lose their color when they have no "companion"

Wow! I never thought of that but he is the only fish in the tank right now. I just bought him a couple days ago and I was thinking of getting more in a few days. Do you have any suggestions on a good tank mate? Thanks for your help!

mine got darker w/ age even I thought he got darker w/ lighting too

I notice my clown colors brighting up a little bit more when i added a second clown and i also think diet has to play in it big time as well... I started adding selcon to my food here and there.
