Why do fish do this?

I have seen other videos of fish and I wonder why they do this? Is it just a vortech thing?

Seems like odd, but repetitive behavior.

Click picture, its a video.

Hah, I've had a Dwarf Angel that did that before, as well as a yellow tang, and some Chromis that would as well.I don't think there is a reason, fish just like to swim around objects in a never ending fashion...

Never seen that one before! I know my dad's midas blenny will actually let itself get sucked onto the side then swim off casually like nothing happened :spin2:

none of my fish have ever done it but I have seen it before with a Niger Trigger

What I think is . It is at the sucking end of the powerhead and if you have a auto feeder on the tank . The food will go to the fish .Then the fish do not have to look for the food

Complete guess would be differing water currently around the pump may actually make it fun to spin around the pump housing.

I had a naseau tang that loved to swim right into the sump output flow and let the output push him along for 1/4 of the tank.....he'd swim back up and do it again.....over and over.

You would think water movement might have something to do with it, but the pump was actually off during the video lol. I will keep an eye on it and see if it stops when the pump is back on.

Boredom and an uncomfortable fish in probably too small of a tank for the fish, imo.

I had fish do this in all of my small tanks, never in my 200+ gallon tanks.

Does it change depending on if the glass is clean or dirty? Have you tried placing either a white or black solid paper sheet on the outside of the glass to see if this changes?

How long have you had that fish? I notice that when I get new fish it takes a few days for them to get used to the tanks dimensions and they nose at the glass a lot - however that trigger I mentioned above kept doing it even after 6 months in the tank. He was a 3-4" trigger in a 125. He eventually jumped out.

I've had the fish 8 months. Its been in that tank for probably half that time. I don't consider it a new fish.

Also I think the tank size (58 gallon) is totally adequate for a dwarf angel, unless it is one of the largest ones.

The tang is a temporary resident, it was given to me for free because a friend was having some trouble with QT. The tang was quarantined and is going to a LFS soon.

He wasn't out when the lights came back on, but I remember someone posting a video of their Chaetodon larvatus doing the same thing. The reason it stuck out in my mind was because the fish was so hard to keep and there it was in the video doing laps around the powerhead. (I think he had a vortech as well, but can't recall for sure)

My C. argi does this and nowhere near a powerhead. Every now and then he swims to the back of the tank and starts doing loops. After a minute or two he swims off. This fish is in a 180g tank, is well fed and probably the most "aggressive" fish in the tank so I don't think the tank conditions have much to do with it. I once asked him why he was doing this. He just looked at me like I was an idiot and swam off. Rude fish. ;)

With the pump off the fish could be trying to figure out how to get into the opening thinking it is a cave etc.

My new flame will swim into the powerhead (off) and then swim out.

That would be my guess as well. The powerhead just happen to be there. The fish is actually chasing his own reflection from the glass.
