Why do we even monitor ORP on the APEX?

What in the world is this for, really? Its another probe that has a number that appears on my apex dashboard and I still really have no idea what its for. I read about ORP. And I still don't know what in the world it is. My previous water change the ORP averaged about 420. This water change it averages about 450. You got me. Its consistent. The only swings are at water changes. Even Randy Holmes ( I think that's his name) article on reef chemistry says control not recommended and its variable throughout the ocean. Why does APEX even waste an outlet on this in their system?

My tank was born on 8/29/17. ORP has continued to rise throughout its life. I've always heard that's good. If something makes some intense swing all of a sudden. I've heard that might be bad. That's about all I have on ORP.

ORP carries some value, but it's pretty much only of interest when one is running ozone on their tank.

I'll assume you read this but just for others..

You would likely need to ask APEX why they decided it was important enough for them..

I personally have never had a system nor do I see a need to monitor it..
I would likely end up in a pile right next to the PH probe that I do not use either on my Reef Angel controller..

And knowing you :p I'd recommend you remove it too before you freak out..

McG, when I grow up I want to be just like you. I did read that article about the battlefield, etc. I came out more twisted than I went in. Did you know that was even possible?

Long of the short of it was I didn't much see a real need for measuring it either. Woaa, pump the breaks! yes, I said it. Why measure it? I've come a long way...

In general I find that Randy does a "fairly decent" job of keeping his articles "non-scientific friendly" and sometimes even slightly entertaining compared to some other "reef related" articles I have read before..

I've become really "lax" in my reef keeping mentalities over time so while there are certainly situations where having the data is helpful most of the times I just fine it causes more "panic" than anything else..
PH is certainly one of those things that many people have access to but maybe shouldn't ;)
ORP is just out there on its own as its not too common but another one of those.. "why am I looking at this again?" devices for most..
