Why do you perform freshwater dips?

I read a couple of posts that people were dipping their clams in FW. What is the reason for this? What is the procedure?

Thanks

To sum it up the dip is to attempt to treat the pinching mantle problem(assuming it is a disease). The procedure is to get the water to the same temperature and ph as the tank. You can adjust ph by adding vinegar to lower it or baking soda to raise it. Then let the clam sit in the FW for 30 minutes.

FWIW, I have done several dips and they have only been temporary fixes for me. For the best results, the clams should be quarantined after the dip. During the quarantine the disease in the tank will have no host and the it's life cylce should stop. Then the clams can be reintroduced to the display. I have dipped my clams for up to 50 minutes and they always pull through.
