Why does coralline grow so much faster on powerheads....?

Anyone know why coralline grows so fast on powerheads? My glass and acrylic overflow are easy to keep scraped however my powerheads grow coralline like crazy and constantly need vinegar baths to keep clean. does anyone know why?

maybe the rough surface? the plastic is different then the glass and acrylic, so its easier for the coraline to get a foot hold on?

I would look at it this way, you should clean your PH's to get the sludge, and possible calcium carbonate build up out of the pump to keep it in good/efficient working order. The build up of coraline algae is just the visual indicator that it's time to do it.

i'll bet it's far more likely due to the electromagnetic fields on and around the powerhead.

It's because it's harder to clean there.
It's an adaptation of Murphy's Law.

If it's harder to clean, I going to grow there. :).

Magnetic fields.... Bring back the Eco-Aqualizer ;)

you might want to google 'biorock' ( http://www.biorock.net)

the proven and measurable phenomenon of using electric current to aid in calcification, and settlement of calcifying organisms is well documented, and has nothing to do w/anything concerning the bs that is the eco-aqualizer. :)

maybe sticking LR in the MRI machines will make it turn purple faster...lol

Regarding cleaning power heads in Vinegar, can someone give me specific instructions on how they do this? I.E. Vinegar/water ratio, what they do before putting power head back in tank, etc. Thx!

just fill a bucket w/vinegar, enough to cover the powerheads, plug 'em in, let 'em run for 10-20 minutes.

remove from the bucket.

dis-assemble to remove the impeller/magnet, wipe clean, re-assemble, place back in tank.

Just use CLR it works much better IMO than vinegar does. Soak and rinse well
