Why does every blue tort I buy turn purple?

This would make a great argument if it weren't for the fact that there are probably more people in this thread that say they are getting the outstanding blue color with their colony near the bottom. Some as much as 20" or more........

I can't discount what I saw first hand. The fact that there are 6 or more named LE blue torts floating around plus all the random wilds that have shown up I was pointing out what I have noticed when I knew they were the same tort. There is enough variables to being with and we have a bunch of people comparing different torts.

What about this colony about 6-8" under 400 watt Iwasakis?

Same coral in a friends tank under the same lighting, but about 18" under the water.

I'd definitely say the ORA/cali is more towards the purple side and if you really want the blue go with the Oregon.

Scott, I'd have to say that green with the ORA/cali torts is mostly to do with lighting as my water parameters have fluctuated a LOT in the past few months and I haven't had any color changes in my tort. Soli has changed, the leng sy has changed and the pink milles have changes, but the tort is pretty consistence. The last time I saw green in my tort was when I had the 250 watt CV 15Ks

So what has changed since last may that caused it to go from nearly white to its current color?

drbronx.
I have had a CBB for about 7 weeks now.
I haven't been able to get him to any introduced food.

He/it has eaten all of my feathers and aiptasia.

I do have lots of pods, but I also have a green mandarin.

I haven't tried worms or clams yet, although I may be able to get some fresh clams on the east coast near Cape Canaveral.

I'm worried too, but so far he looks healthy.

In an earlier thread I posted that I may start a aiptasia grow out tank to feed it.

I started today with a 20 L and some old rock. Once it gets going my lfs has some aips I will get.
Let them grow and put a rock in the main tank.

I hope he/it makes it

Different colored polyps on same frag

Different colored polyps on same frag

Here's a pic of our ORA Cali tort frags fresh after gluing them. They are under 400w 12k ReefLux side by side with 400w 10k ReefLux. Notice how the polyps closer to the light are purple and the shaded polyps farther down the body are green. Developmental thing or light response?? Just thought I'd add more experiences to this already confusing situation of light vs nutrients = color. The mother corals which remain higher up in the tank stay almost 100% purple in color while the frags that get dropped about 8" further down start showing a little green.

Edit: That didn't work and now I can't delete my post. I guess I'll have to try to post a picture a different way.

Sorry but I am a bit confused. You mention a couple of things:

1. The mother corals which remain higher up in the tank stay 100% purple in color.

2. Frags that get droppped about 8" down start showing a little green

My question then is what depth did you find most of the blue? I am just trying to determine if I should raise or lower mine. My 3 frags are almost entirely purple now. Would you raise them up or lower them down to get back to blue?

I don't have a good pic at the moment but my cali tort is major purple with solid green polyps. Originally it was more purple than blue, the frag, but had bluish/purple polyps. I have another tort...some think it is a myiagi tort, that was purple to start with and is now a mixture of purple/green with purple polyps. I keep the cali tort about 15" under 14K 250w phoenix bulbs and the other tort 8" under the same lights. My phosphates have been really low, .02 and really high .11 and still both torts stay the same color. I really think the lighting has a lot to do with the color of these torts. Just my opinion...wish it was more blue.

Interestingly, my oregon frag is most definately affected by the phosphates...darkening and getting a bit brownish blue instead of aqua blue since phosphates jumped up in the .08-.11 range.

Johnnstacy...

I see why you are confused. They are seen here in this photo centered under the 12k light which is causing them to look more blue than purple. They are really more of a really dark purple leaning a little towards blue. We get the color you see higher up in the tank. When we put them lower or if they are slightly shaded then the green starts to show more. If the pics showed our Oregon Tort frags next to these the difference between blue and purple would be distinguishable.

Yeah, for sure those are the bluest purple frags I have ever seen!
