Why does everyone call it a "firefish goby"?

I can't figure how it's a goby at all! Is this just a common misconception?

The way I read it, it's a dartfish - family Ptereleotridae, not Gobiidae in any way that I can find.

I"ve actually never heard it referred to as a goby, just simply "firefish" at LFS's and then a slightly more descriptive firefish dart...

When I researched I figured out it was a goby. I always referred it to a firefish, I am assuming that the fish looks sort of like a flame, hence the name?

That doesn't really bug me tbh but scooter blenny does!

You do see this happen a lot though. Another example being convict goby. Its why scientific names are the way to go.
