Why does my MJ900 keep locking up?

I replaced the stock pump in my 14 gallon BioCube with a MaxiJet 900 about a year ago. I pause the pump during feeding and lately the MJ900 has not started back up when the feeding interval is done. I can get it to run by removing the pump from chamber 3 and manually turning the impeller, but it is hardly normal. Is one year all I should expect from a MaxiJet pump? Thanks.

The Maxi-jet pumps along with the Korila Power heads are Magnetic driven. When used in salt water, there are little things like Alage & crap that will gather around the shafts. If there is a build up, the Mag wont turn with out a push. If you dont take it out.......just tap it, you will see it start up.

The best way is to take it out when you do your water changes ( every 2 weeks )......Take the pump apart & clean it

Thanks Flipper. That makes sense. After posting it had occurred to me to soak the pump in a vinegar solution or something to drop the pH and dissolve all that encrusted scale. Does that make sense?

the vinegar is a great solution. I use about 1-2 cups of vinegar in a 5 gallon bucket of hot water and let the pumps run for a few hours. Then, I manually scrub every visible surface (a dedicated $5 power toothbrush works wonders for this).. After you're done scrubbing, run the pumps in "regular" water for a half hour or so, and put them back in. They should be almost as good as new.

I have really never found the need to use vinegar. I just take it apart & clean it with water, Put it back together & its fine.
