i have two toadstools in my tank. 1 just above the other. they never seem to open at the same time, generally the lower ( bigger one ) is open more than the upper smaller one . is there any reason for this ? could the higher one be getting to much light ??

I think they open when they want to feed, mine sometime stays closed for 2 days, then is open for days at a time. IMO

toadstools should be open whenever the lights are on unless they're not happy. I know mine wont open if it's in too much flow so try moving it around. If you just got them, give them time to adjust to your tank. Mine took a few days.

the bigger one that opens more is bout 2 weeks old. the other is 3-4. ill see if i cn re-adjust the flow. as the smaller one is currently puttied to a rock. lol :) thanx. i feed daily with salifert coral food. ill try not feeding for a dayor 2 see if it gets hungry haha

Well a couple of things come to mind:

- If your corals (The Taodstools) are only a couple weeks old in your tank, you should leave them alone for now. Leathers can be just as finicky as many other corals... it could take weeks, or even months before they fully acclimate to their new envoronment. I wouldn't adjust the flow unless you truly think it will benefit them.

- How much are you feeding and when? Corals learn to open when the tank is fed. Most corals open up at night in nature, but most reefers feed at night... which teaches the corals to open during the day. This is but a very simple and generalized explanation.. there are tons of articles I invite you to read in reefkeeping magazine.

- Check around the coral to see if anything is slightly irritating it. You'd be surprised to see who or what is under these corals.

- Check your pH... may it's swinging a bit more than is comfortable between the night and day?

ph seems to be preety stable...i feed salifert coral food ( liquid ) as it directs 5 ml per 120 litres daily ( i do it after lights out about 11pm ) ill have a look around the coral later. thanks for the advice guys :D:D

I moved both of my toadstools from one tank to another and one took about a week to fully open back up.

Even after moving it a couple of times to a different area in the tank it took about a week to open back up.
