Why I do not use a clean up crew.

When my tank would cycle I would get the algae blooms. When it came time for green hair algae I would dump a whole lot of snails and hermits. Of course this number was based on a online store guide.


I finally began to understand nutrient export when I first went with an ATS in 2011.

2016 new tank and no clean up crew. My goal is for the tank to not grow algae, if I don't grow algae I would have to feed a CUC, feeding means more nutrient export. If they die more export. If they live and eat the algae they just poop it out and really don't solve the issue of what caused the algae to grow.

This is just my observation.

I agree somewhat. I've had two hermits and two turbos for almost two years. All I've ever needed

I dealt with issues on sand and rocks... I had only a few crabs or snails. I was beyond frustrated. After adding a huge cleanup crew , my sand and rocks are completely spotless. Only thing I use is my magnetic flipper for glass. I don't worry about overfeeding either.
