Today I noticed that my 1 week old 90 gallon was randomly making snapping noises. I thought at first it was my electronics, but all is well. I hope that the glass isnt the culpret and i am sure its not because i looked high and low for cracks and chips inside the silicone. my 55 did the same thing for a while too and i never figured it out.

Oh yeah,...i dont have a pistol shrimp either.

Meh, my tank has popped since I can remember. Especially at night if I turn on a light.. I have been told it was my clown "barking".

Do you have a clownfish?

Kind of hard to pinpoint sound in water or see a clown bark..lol

All I know is I have never noticed anything bad from it, and it is kind of a cool little mystery.

I think the pistol and mantis explanations are wrong, and commonly pointed to. At least in my case there is no pistol or mantis to worry about.

IME clowns DO stay fairly active at night, and he does kind of look grumpy when this is occurring, hiding in or coming out of his cave a bit.

A mantis? i didnt know that they snapped and i farely certain that i dont have one.

BArking Clownfish? thats a new one for me. i do have a clown though. Maybe hes lonely and wants a mate.

also, i can hear the pops from down my hallway and in my livingroom. so, they are farely loud.

I agree with pistol maybe mantis, but II think pistol. Happens all the time in my tank. Always has, I starte my first tank with TBS rock from the Gulf and it is loaded with pistols and mantis.

i have popping in my nano i saw the mantis 1x and never agin. The sucker is very stealthy. All i know is i have no hermits left or snails in my tank casue this beast killed everything. I won't say my 1 small clown is making the noise that's for sure.

Yea. Probably a mantis. They run out of snails/crabs they'll be going after yur fish next. Maybe a trap can get him... otherwise you'll have to break down the tank. I waited for a few years till I had to move the tank to track my guy down. They are extremely fast, clever, and good hunters. I got lucky and saw what rock he went into and got him out. I think somebody asked me if I cared what they did with him and I said "nah". Next thing I knew he was in a glass with hot sauce and other odd things being added. Poor guy. :smokin: Just keep an eye out. He'll start showing his face more and more and more if he's hungry and needs to hunt. Then you can figure out what to do later.
