Now is the best time to change up if that is what you want to do. The longer you wait the more dramatic the change in your tank will be. Drama is not what you want in a well established tank, beleive me. As far as mixing the sand w/ the cc, I think it is just a matter of looks. If you are o.k. w/ "chunky" sand just take out half of the cc and mix your sand w/ it. If you want a pristine looking bottom take out all of the cc and add sand. I've seen guys leave a layer about an inch or so of the cc on the bottom and cover that with 3 inches of sand. This bottom layer made a plenum of sorts, but looked pretty ugly turning brown over time. Its all up to you. Its your tank. Any one of these methods would work for you.
