Why should I NOT do this with my overflow??

I have attached 2 photos. The curved pipe used to be in the overflow box and there was a ton of gurgling noise. The second photo I pulled the curved pipe off and now things are much quieter. So my question is...what's the catch??? Is something going to go terribly wrong?

Thanks!!

sorry can't tell from the picture. Is there a picture 1?

you can make a durso standpipe to reduce the noise level a little. Maybe it's gurgling because water level is lower. Have you been topping off?

edit. saw your built thread picture. Your water level here looks higher than last picture. I think the gurgling is just the built design. Problem with this is if anything falls into that hole and block it, you will overflow. You should stick with the durso standpipe

Get a screen for it and you'll be fine. Worst that can happen is like m0nkie said. Other than that if a small fish gets in... like 2 of mine did then they take a ride down to the sump. Herbie is the best but require you changing up some things.

Noise. It stops the gurgle noise. The benefit of this setup is that its completely silent. By the way I wouldn't stick screen over an open pipe like mentioned above things tend grow wildly in an overflow and it could get clogged with a screen covering it.

I think he already had a ghetto stand pipe built.. he removed the cap due to noise.

OP. just stick with the Durso Standpipe if you cannot drill any more holes for Herbie plumbing. I wouldn't use a net to cover the hole. Algae will quickly grow over the net.

If you still think the Durso is too loud, your only option is to either drill your tank, OR restrict your return pump. You want water to slowly pour down the durso..

Putting a pair of elbows (or a T and an elbow, same thing) will certainly quieten things down some, and in some cases it may make the durso close to silent, but in most cases it will be noisy, particularly if you push the drain closer to its capacity.
