Why so hard to find anemones?

I've been looking for a place that has a decently sized anemone that my 3in cinnamon clown would enjoy. I want one that looks amazing but isn't $150+ and I can't find a place online that has a decent selection. BlueZoo and Liveaquaria aren't very impressive when it comes to anemones. I see some amazing ones at ExtremeCorals but they are relatively small and since they are listed as "mini maxi" anemones, I wonder how large they will actually grow? Anyone have any suggestions? I've been all through the sponsors' sites and have been less than impressed.

The "mini maxi" anemones are not hosting anemones.

I currently have 4 S. Haddonis, 2 were bought from an LFS, one from Diver's Den section of LA, and one from Pacific East.

No nematocysts? Well that answers that question. Anyone recommend a company they've dealt with that has a good selection?

What type of anemone are you looking for?

What size tank?
What lights?
What are your parameters? (( with numbers ))

Reefhotspot usually has some nice bubble tip morphs under $150. They grow fast, so if you protect it for a little bit from the clown until it settles in, you will be fine, but 'looks amazing' does not equal cheap unless you start small. Somebody must have some BTAs that are splitting and would sell or trade cheaper. Just start networking a bit more.

If you order from them, make sure you get from their WYSIWYG section or you might get a bleached one like I did.

did you check out divers den on liveaquaria? what you see in the pic is what you get and some of those anemones are nice looking.

what kind in particular are you looking for? LTA or BTA? or carpet maybe

Ammo = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 5 (thanks to my DIY nitrate reactor)
SG = 1.025
Phos = 0
Calcium is on the high end of the spectrum
pH = 8.3
Temp = 78 degrees
Tank size = 65 gal
Lighting = 2x250w halides with LED blue and whites
DSB of 3 inches
Fish = 3 inch cinnamon clown, 2 firefish, and a royal gramma

I refuse to have another BTA. I had one and he was doing wonderfully. He split and then I had two beautiful BTAs. One disappeared. The other one got down behind a rock the other day and I couldn't reach him. He finally came out today and was mush. He died a few hours later. I would like a saddle anemone or carpet. I doubt they are easier to stick in one place but I'm wanting to try something else since I had such bad (well, first GOOD and then bad) luck with the BTA. My clown is beside itself with grief!

I'm also wanting to make sure it's not one that'll outgrow the tank but that is a possibility with saddle/carpets so I'm open to suggestions. I checked LiveAquaria's Divers Den and nothing grabbed my attention.

It seems like you are talking about an S. Haddoni when you mention a saddle/carpet. If you want a blue or a red one, good luck finding one under $150. The only time any of my Haddonis move is when I do something -- mainly change the flow since they are very sensitive to flow. They can/will eat fish, and can very well take over a tank. My red one is getting close to 20" in diameter.

It doesn't have to be blue or red but the mature size is what really bothers me. I don't want half a tank that is nothing but one enormous playground for my one clownfish. The lil sucker likes to bite me when I put my hand in the tank, anyway. He's lucky he hasn't been banished to the refugium as punishment! ;) What about a sebae anemone? They aren't as colorful but it might work out a little better. I'm still open to ideas.

I went w/ an H. Malu for this very reason, and loving it(so are my clowns)
Sand dwellar, so easy to keep from sps or crawling over rocks, really nice colors, max size is 8-10"
Reefhotspot has had them among other places, though they are not real easy to come across, just keep checking.

Like "Davocean" stated, if you go for a "Sebae" get an H. Malu, and NOT an H. Crispa -- I had an H. Crispa many many years ago, and it took up about 1/3 of my 75.

If you find a small S. Haddoni, realize that they will grow, sure you can slow it down by limiting their feedings, but they will still grow.

You can go back to just Davo Todd, actually prefer it!LOL(I hate when the SN I want is taken)
And yeah, I'd stay away from Crispa, my last one max'd at 2', and my LTA about 18".
Between the 2 it was nearly impossible to have corals, and why I went out of my way to find a Malu.
BTW, my avatar is not my Malu, that is a RBTA, guess I should change that but then peeps might not recognize me.

WOW!! they are going for that much these days??? I had 5 RBTA's in my old tank. when I tore it down, I sold 2 for $25 each, gave one to the new owners of my GSM mated pair ($25) and then trashed the rest.... DANG!!!
