wich grouper should i buy

dont know if it will get along with those fishes or not but i have a minatus and they are an awsome fish i plan on adding a blueline grouper as well once the larger tank is established minatus are fine with eels since i have seen no problem with mine so far

My experience is only with miniatus groupers and I can tell you they are AGGRESSIVE, no other fish can come near their spot of the rockwork they have designated home, and when feeding time comes, they always eat until they basically cant hold anymore. It's hard to get anyone else food with one of those beasts in there.

Go with a V tail grouper, Mine is almost full grown and has never been a problem with anything.

Wlyon did your grouper change colors as it got older or did it stay the same color as a juvenile. just wonderingu cause I love the color of a miniatus grouper and the juvenile v tail looks almost the same as a miniatus

When I bought him he had a lot more bright red on his face compared to now, however the back half of him hasn't changed at all. Currently working on my lights so I have no light on my tank to get a pic of him but this was taken about two weeks ago, and you can see how his face has changed colors a bit from the Juvenile. He is currently about 7"/8" long.

I wouldn't put anything else in the tank with a grouper, groupers get huge and before you know it, he will out grow the tank. I have an almost 2ft grouper in a 220, who i'm moving to an aquarium and the only place he's going is in a shark tank. You cant drop a thing in my groupers tank without him going after it. but that's just my two cents.

I got a miniatus recently and the fish is awesome!! Like others have mentioned they will claim and defend aggressively their area of the tank, which will generally be somewhere with little light that he can easily hide from anything from. Mine is usually hiding most of the time with usually half his head sticking out of some hole or rock eyeing everything arround him for food. Mine is about 5 inches long and he eats like an assassin... he’s hiding most of the time until he hears the commotion of the other fish feeding, then he sees the food, and like an assassin powered by lighting hits a piece of food then darts as fast as he can back to his bat cave... awesome fish great color!! I had a Lyretail but he became food for my lion. I like the Miniatus more... up to you :)

Just got a good look at my V-tail grouper and with the lights off for two days he got back all his read color and looks just like the juvenile now : )

Stay away from the Miniatus, they're mean as hell. I'm not sure about the other one though.

mine isnt mean at all he is a more skittish of a fish hes in a tank with 3 archers smaller than him and a moray and sofar nothing bad has happend but will he develope more agreession?once i get my larger tank i plan on keeping him with the fish above and a blueline grouper,2 yellowsailfin tangs, naso tang, chevron tang, snow flake eel and possibly a dragon wrasse to help take care of hitchhikers

If your profile is correct and you have this grouper in a 100 gal tank, please let us know how things are in a year or so.

Hopefully ill have a 210+, am married and have a new house.... but incase I don’t get this promotion that im working on ha-ha, I have an arrangement with my lfs that they will buyback all my larger fish... I prefer to keep all my fish small, that way I always get to keep new fish and more of them rather than few larger fish.

I have a 300 gal tank and i am looking at these two groupers

This is a well thought-out group of fish, IMO. If they are all established, tossing a grouper into the mix will probably result in some temporary chaos as the pecking order is rearranged. But, I think introducing a minitaus or lyretail that was on the smaller side (but big enough to protect himself) may work. The only Minitaus I've kept was certainly aggressive; but sure not the worst fish I've owned. As always, when adding any fish to a group like yours; have a ''plan B". Even at 300 gallons, with your stocklist, space is getting to be a real consideration----especially when considering all these fish at adult size. But, if I had a good backup plan, I'd try it. A real plus with your plan (IME & IMO) is that many of your present fish, while on the aggressive side, aren't extremely territorial, like groupers are.
As to your "which one" question: IMO, whichever one you like best, no big difference.
