wierd zoa deaths

ok zoa fans, lets see if you can figure this one out for me.... so i had a colony of green skirt/blue center/green mouth zoas and they were doing great for several months. as they grew i noticed that a few that had grown on the edge of the frag had morphed into green skirt/ blue center/ pink mouth (blowpops?). now, for no apparent reason, all of the original green mouth zoas closed up and are disintegrating away while the new pink mouth ones are open and appear to be totally fine. no other zoas in my tank seem irritated in any way (well, except my one PPE, but it never looks good). so... what made all of the green mouthed colony die while sparing the "mutant" pink ones that are part of the same mat? it seems really wierd to me.

Most likely cause, the zoas on the outskirts of the colony are not the same animal.

Otherwise, it's hard to say without a picture. Even then, try to get in close.

i know, but my closeup pictures are so blurry they will definitly not be helpful. we can't all have the fancy macro cameras and picture taking skill. but i guess reef junkie sort of answered my question - maybe, because they mutated, they are also more hardy than the other ones were.

I know what you mean. It's not easy getting those closeup picks unless you have knowhow and a decent camera with macro mode.

Try taking as close a picture with still keeping the subject in sharp focus. Then take the picture and open it in photoshop. Then cut out just the colony and enlarge/resize the picture.

That's what I do and it works pretty well.;)

i'll see what i can do about getting a pic tomorrow afternoon. for now... basically what it is is they are closed, and sort of like... pinching off at the bottom and falling off, or just melting away. i don't understand it because they were doing so good for a long time and those other ones on the same mat are still doing good... which makes me think not a predator or a disease...
