Wife wants clam

I think there all about the same if you have proper lighting and water quality.

What are your tank specs. size sump lighting water test(calcuim, alk, mag, nitrate, nitrite, amon) fish stocking.

I'd disagree.

I have found clams to vary a lot by size and species.
Croceas are the least forgiving whereas deresas and squamosas are much hardier.

I have a maxima for my first because it was the only one I could find locally. Derasa or squamosa would be better. These need less light than croceas and maximas.

Maxima would be pretty much the only option for you. Squamosa and Derasa get over 16" when fully grown. Maximas only get up to about 6". Its a high light clam (meaning T5 at least) and needs to be on the rocks. Its also one of the most colorful which will make the wife happy. ;) Just keep up on your water quality and Ca/Alk dosing.

I'm pretty sure maximas grow bigger than croceas. I believe they get up to about 10-12", while croceas max out around 6-8". I've seen maximas in the ocean that were definitely bigger than 6". In the same area there were croceas as well. The biggest croceas I saw were considerably smaller than the biggest maximas I saw. Either would be fine in a 30g tank. They both grow pretty slow (compared to gigas/derasa at least).

i disagree, maximas are the least forgiving.

if you have the lighting, a crocea is the clam best suited to your tank.

here ya go.

Gentlemen,

I was under the same impression until I got into a discussion about it at a local reef club meeting with one of the Mod's over at the old Clam's Direct site. He was the one who pointed out that I was in error and that Crocea were less forgiving.

Right after I posted that I knew that question would come up! ;) I don't remember his name but its Jeorge aka Seahorsedreams (the nurse who is the sea horse expert) husband if that helps. The site that would allow me to look up his name is currently down too... I will get back to you on it
