wild caught black osc

I don't think mwp is on this board anymore. But his suspicions were that of lighting having a very strong influence on color. He bought two "halfblack" ocellaris and they were under dim lighting at the store he purchased them. Once thrown into his home tank they quickly turned almost completely black. In the aquarium at his home he had mh lighting i believe. not sure what is what in this hobby, so many different what if's...
Keefsama, where did you get wc and how are you sure they are so?

MWP frequesnts the breeding forum and from what we have been discussing esp with the b/w clowns when exposed to brighter than normal lights ( MH / T5 ) he had a pair of muddy brown / half black occs that fully colored up so the light in some part does play a role wether direct or indirect.

Me personally think its got to do something more with the darker pigmented clowns i used to own a pair of black melanistic clarks and under N/O lighting they were a drab black soon as my MH went over their tank they got super dark and right now my occ's are under N/O lighting until i acn get the T5 setup then i will let u guys know how the coloring goes.

In mwp's case, the siblings of the pair he acquired were normal black O's . I don't think it was light, I think it was maturity.

JMO.

There was no control to the experiment. If he had left one of the clowns in the "dim" light, and one in bright light, and had there been a change in one and not the other, I would have been more convinced. If they had taken 100 identical ones and split them between light intensities, and seen a difference,THAT would have been convincing.

pic of what i believe are Captive bred australian clowns.

How big is that pair Huey?

I ask because a fellow reefer/freind just ordered in a group of WC (supposedly - I have my doubts) black and white ocellaris. I am heading over to his place on Tuesday to pick out mine from the group and curious how they might compare with yours. Are yours the more ghostly/pale look like the pics shows or was this short after adding them to the tank and more stressed colors?

tang

i used flash so they look more washed out.

i ll bet that your freinds are the same as mine. they are slighty pale but its bec they are juv. i think this bec i can see thru there bodies slightly. i was thinking the same as you. i did not believe it until i saw them. they just look alot better than the ones ive been seeing in the us. i 100% know they are from aussie but initially thoughty they were wc but after fishys comments, he s convinced me they are prob capitive. either way its ok as long as they are a diff lineage.

i have no doubt though they will get very dark. im not at all worried about color. i picked them for there body shape.

they are about 2.5 inches. good size for juvs.

christian

we have VERY BAD stock of black osc in the us. so were very happ to know some are getting into the us from aussie.

Now that is more like it, those are nice looking fish. I'm not talking about color but body confirmation, that is what a clownfish is supposed to look like. C'mon guys, hook a brother up :) Where are these fish available ????

I'm on it, I can't get up there until next week Wednesday. If they have them I will get 6-8 or even more. Now the question is this, I have 8 fish now from two seperate pairs, both assumed to be ORA fish. I am thinking make one or two pair of aussie/ aussie, one or two pair from the two us pairs and and split the rest making pairs of aussie/us. What do you think?

Hi,

remember that I posted about the Australian captive breed I was offered and only took a pair? The price was rather high 45$ wholesale / piece. I still regret having only taken two fish.

They have problems finding their role and are aggressed by a Centropyge. Unfortunately they are in ab in tank and can't catch them easy. Broodstock tank for them has been already set up and is waiting.

Mine are dark black was expected, have no deformation and all bands as expected.

BTW I just missed by two days that one here sold a adult black spawning pair and the new owner does not even want to breed ... :(

Sounds like a good trade. :)

The female in my spawning pair was id'd here on RC as a Black Darwin Ocellaris. I got her 6+ years ago. I am unsure where she came from I picked her up from a lfs employee that had her. She developed the black over the first year I had her. I wonder if she could be wild or captive bred. Know way to know. I don't know a thing about body type, deformities, etc. Does she look "messed up"? I am just curious about the whole looks thing and so many of you on here know way more than me. I adore her and she spawns regularly, I swear she is laying eggs every few weeks. She has never become completely black, her underbelly has some orange and her face is still orange, the rest is jet black. Here are a few pics over the years. Mostly just curious about her.

2001, she is on the right and I though then she was a percula, like I said I don't know a lot about fish :)

2002, definately black in this shot...she has had two mates, I lost her first mate back about 4 years ago.

Recent shot 12/2006. A bit blurry and not the greatest but you get the idea.

whatever she is , its a very nice clownfish. if i had to decide i would vote her as a captive from a us line. a percentage of these have orange faces. again im only speculating this based on the 6 i saw recently from aussie. even as juveniles they all have dark faces. ive also noticed withe the aussie clowns. there fins are very wide.

ive had us bred black osc. and my pair was very nice very dark, except the one like yours, still retained the orange face. i believe the aussie ones do not.atleast the ones ive seen so far. even as juv. they do not have orange faces at all.

I just talked to SDC, they are saying the bo's they have are from Australia. They have maybe 150 in stock now (9am). I guess I'm gonna drive up to check them out.

When I get up there I'm gonna hand pick some special ones for you Edgar :smokin: I'll tell Eric you are looking for
"genetic diversity" :D
