Wild sand and rock

Has anyone ever put wild sand or rock from the Gulf of Mexico in a reef tank? Dangerous idea? Legal?

I have brought some LR & LS home from Mexico(Carribean side) on a couple occasions. Nothing bad has happened. Just put it in a QT for a while, I had a few pistol shrimp come with the rock.

I think your asking if it ok to take sand and rock from the wild. The answer is no. It's not legal to do it, or don't get caught. It may not be clean enought to put in your tank depending on where you pick it up at. The sand close to shore is to fine and sand storms would be an issue anyway.
