Wildlife World Zoo

Has anyone been to the Wildlife World Zoo recently? I went this past weekend and was in their saltwater section and found some of the fish to be extremely unhealthy. Does anyone know if they received the fish in this condition or are they neglecting them? In particular, there was a Sailfin and a blue hippo tang that looked horrible. The sailfin has white circles all over it's face that looked like scars and at most 10% of it's fins left. The blue hippo tang was almost colorless, it was a very pale blue with the same type of white circular scars all over it's body.

REALLY???

I was going to organize a FRAG Field Trip to check out their new SW system... wonder whats up, as I heard it was going to be really a great addition to the Zoo.

The fish that I am talking about are in their old SW system. But if they cant care for 2 fish, how can they take care of over 250,000 gallons with many many more fish? The new system should be finished in December, from what they told me.

where is this world zoo?

I'd def be down with a frag fieldtrip there...

any chance any one knows anyone there such that we might finagle a behind the scenes look? That'd be cool. I bet they have a big skimmer planned!

I haven't been there in probably six months. On the times I visited I thought they did a good job. I have only been about three times in my life and in fact thats the first place I ever saw a unicorn tang. I'm intrested to hear what comes of this.

Sounds like HLLE (Head and Lateral Line Erosion) It is particularly common in Tangs in large systems and is very hard to reverse. I inherited a few with my system at Rainforest Cafe, though they've gone on lived long lives. Although it's not good looking, it doesn't seem to effect the fish much. I believe it is linked to diet and living conditions.

That being said, I could be totally wrong with this diagnosis without a picture. It could potentially be numerous other things.

Yea I have a few things planned for next year and a couple good guest speakers, but I was thinking once they open maybe April/May or abouts, would be a great chance to have a field trip there. I am SURE I can talk them into a behind the scenes :D

Ive been there also and those two tangs looked really bad since last april when i went. they seem to be in a tank thats less than 150 gallons.

they also had a bamboo and 2 coral cat sharks (all were about 2 ft already) in less than a 180 gallon tank with not much turning room they had fake freshwater plants in with them too if i remember correctly. they didnt seem to have much husbandry skills from what was on display. hopefully they hire people who actually know how to keep healthy specimens.

Here are two pictures I took there.
I had some other pictures but not clear.

Yep, that's lateral line erosion. You can see it starting on the lateral line, good in the 1st pic. This is something that doesn't normally happen in reef tanks, just in swim only systems. When I took my position at Rainforest , I had numerous Zebrasoma Tangs and two lionfish with this. Whitefaced, only color left was in their eyes. However, after changing the diet of the Lion's the color started to return to their faces. They made a full recovery, which took almost 4 months. I haven't yet been able to reverse it on Tang spieces, I hear it pretty tough to achieve. I'm sure that their staff is aware of this. Hippo and Sailfin are prone to this, especially if they are not able to graze naturally in their environment.

Yep bingo, very sad. I have heard that massive stray electrical voltage is also a cause of LLE but no supporting facts.

I'd agree with the Ozone, if O3 is too high it can almost remove color/pigment from the fish and leave them very pale. I've discussed this with the guys at Ozone water systems before.

I can't say for sure on the stray voltage, I have never read anything conclusive on it's link to HLLE. I'd recommend a grounding probe to any tank though.

Had a sneek peek today in thier new marine center they hired me to plumb in a couple of pumps and filters for thier lagoons and make up tanks its a real nice center. I haven't been here in some years
