Greetings,

Question for all you anemone/clownfish specialist out there..

Will a bubble-tip anemone host in a Ocellaris Clownfish ???

based on my experience, yes. i currenlty have a Rose bubble hosting a true per and a b/w occ. I had the true perc hosting first and the day after i released the B/W occ into the tank it was in there also.

i never have luck so far

that's why i focus on gig or mag--yet gettin the two also brings u to roller coaster that i'm already ridin now. got a mag days ago and it's doin not as good as i was expectin

So should I add a true percula to help the oscellaris clownfish find the BTA? I thought about adding a maroon clownfish but doing so will be detrimental to the existing oscellaris clownfish. I hear the maroon doesn't co-exist well with other clowns and they tend to be aggressive. Though they are a better match with a BTA.

I have such a cool BTA, but I didn't do my research. I got caught with how cool this guy looks. Check out the BTA - best of both worlds green and red.

My ocellaris clowns a few years back never went into any RBTAs for years, preferring a soft coral. One day I added a gigantea anemone (a natural host), and the female was nosing around in it within a few days. Unfortunately, that gigantea didn't make it and the clowns went back to the coral (not the existing RBTAs).

Sometimes they will and sometimes they won't. It's up to the fish. I had my pair with their RBTA and they would not even give it a second look. I decided to push things a bit by placing them in a breeders net with the anemone and after a couple of days they figured it out and have accepted it. There is quite a bit of discussion about doing this some positive and some negative so you can decide for yourself.

I didn't know a bubble tip would host "IN" an Ocerllaris Clownfish. Maybe the fish "IN" the anemone. But the anemone IN the fish would be kind of difficult.

My ocellaris clown fish pair immediately took to the new BTA. I was lucky that they had a bed to lie in :)

BTA's are always hit or miss. I've had perculas host in them and then had them just completely avoid them. I've had clarkiis, tomatos, and red saddlebacks host in one and then avoid a replacement BTA completely.

The thing with hosting that I've found to be constant is that Maroons love Sebaes and Perculas love Mags. Other than that I can't found any consistency with other anemones.

Okay - sounds like I just have to be patient. I may try adding in a true percula in a months time.

@ zeeter - according to live aquaria, maroons are paired up with BTA??

@ sport507 - thanks for the photos, are those true perculas or OCC?

I got a pair of o clowns and a rbt. They been together for two weeks and all the clowns do is swim by it. Rbt was in there first. Not sure if it matters on which came first. I've got my fingers crossed too.

I could be wrong but I don't think true percs host BTA anemones in the wild and thus are no mote Likly to host your nem than a occ.

As Randy noted, gigantea is a natural host and H. magnifica is also a natural host for ocellaris. If you are up to the challenge of those species, you are more likely to have your fish hosted. If you're new to anemones, BTAs are you best host "beginner" species and hopefully in time your ocellaris will choose to be hosted in it.

I have a pair of ORA Occ and I got a pretty nice sized RBTA. The clowns didn't come near it. A few weeks later I picked up a GBTA and my female went into it within a day. I was pretty surprised since I knew that BTAs were not natural hosts and since they were tank bred clowns.

Now my female spends most of the day inside the GBTA and sleeps in there at night.
