i was in my LFS today and they had a blue maxima in one of their display tanks. i think it was only under pcs because it was under a hood, and didnt look bright enough to be a halide but i could be wrong. the clam looked healthy and didnt look unhappy, but it did have a little bit of brown in its middle. i looking at buying it because the guy said he would sell it to me but im wondering what the odds are of the brown coloring up to blue. it is one of the dark blue clams with the light blue strips.

the brown area may have just been because of your viewing angle. if you are interested in the clam, go back and ask to see him from above and while you're at it make sure he has a good response to shadows. generally a lack of light will appear as bleached or white spot on the clam mantle.

also try to avoid buying the smaller maxima's ( <3" ) as they tend to have a high mortality rate.

something else to think about.... it may be tough for you to maintain the stable parameters a clam requires in a 12G nano.

i am going to go back tomorrow and look at it more carefully. i was just curious how much clams change color and if it may brighten up. it is more than 3 inches. and my parameters are pretty darn stable. all i really have to do is add buffers so with a clam ill just add more. no big deal.

sounds good :)

the color of a clam changes by the angle of the mantle to the light source as well as your viewing angle. a clam kept under good strong lights will definitely color up more than one kept under insufficient lighting.

HTH and post some pics if you decide to get him.

im not to sure what HTH means but i just picked the clam up today so i will give it a day or two and then try and post some pictures. how do you post pictures in a thread on this site. every time i try it cant figure it out so i just post on nano-reef instead.

HTH = Hope This Helps :)

for posting pics, i have a photo bucket account and it's as easy as cutting and pasting. they give you the code and you just paste it in your thread when writing it.
