Hello everyone. Quick question:
Will encrusting corals (e.g. monitpora undata, cyphastrea) die if they run out of space to encrust on?
The reason I ask is that I have some colonies (actually the specific aforementioned examples) that I have had for probably 7 years that have recently started to look unhealthy, while everything else looks great and all parameters are perfect and stable.
These two colonies completely encrusted the rocks they are on about two years ago and cannot grow horizontally anymore. The undata actually looks like it has started to grow slightly vertically, and the polyps in that particular area are closed, almost as if the coral is growing on top of itself.
Anyway, do these need to have rock to encrust on so they don't die, or do I have another problem? Thanks for your help!
