Will live rock be closed for collection soon?
When you think about it; it is the first thing in our hobby to regulate on wild collection that is no so offending to our hobby.
If you think it will not happen then talk someone in the Herp(reptile) industry. And if that dose not shock you then talk to somone in the Aviary (bird) industry.
Regulations have started and limits will follow. No you should not panic, but you should be prepaired. Take care of what you have and try to make it thrive. You never know the next generation of hobbiest may look to you for a hobby.

While I'm not the biggest fan of the current aquacultured live rock (does that term apply?) if collection of what is out there is stopped I don't see why we can't "farm" man made live rock by putting existing rock down in the ocean and waiting for a while. Tampa Bay does this, maybe it would create a new industry for others like them.

If it heads this way there would at least be a drive to figure out how to creatively make eco-friendly attractive live rock.. and maybe some would get permits to do it where you aren't prone to mantis shrimps and pest crabs.

It is done in Tonga for sure. Not because of a lack of rock there, but because it's in deeper water that is harder to collect. Fiji has let so much rock go over the years and now have decided to do something about it, it's like bailing the Titanic. It just means live rock is being collected from other places - Bali, Papua New Guinea, Haiti are a few. Even Hawaii might get in the act. It's too bad aquacultured rock is so poor otherwise nobody would care if rock were collected again.

From what we are hearing, Fiji rock should become back available after the new year. We will still be buying in large quantities to keep the price down, but I do expect it to be a bit higher per pound. Not much, but a little bit. If I hear anything else, I will let you guys know.
