so i was switching over to my 125 from a 55 that i've had for a few years now and in the process i kinda smashed my blue linkia i've had for a good 5 months now. i was for sure it was going to die. However, it did loose a couple legs. Weird thing is, those legs have been crawling around my tank by themselves for a few days now and the starfish itself is still kickin :) i was hopin that maybe they would recover and develope into 3 but i know its doubtful... has anyone ever witnessed this before?

Linckia do reproduce by dropping comets (the main star is an asteroid- how clever) which are the tips of the legs which go on to grow a whole new body and set of legs. However, in order to do that they have to be healthy and well fed, which is somewhat rare in the hobby. With stars there's really no way to tell that though unless they're dying. Even if the star was in otherwise poor condition, the severed legs could go on moving on their own for as long as a month, though 2 weeks is usually about the maximum. At that point they'll either slow down and start dissolving or they'll keep going and the wound will start to heal. If the legs do survive you'll probably want to give away 2 of the stars since it's unlikely that your tank will be able to support 2, let alone 3.
