Will my Ocellaris clowns host a BTA eventually?

I've had these 2 clowns for a little over a year now and I finally bought them a BTA about 2" in diameter at the foot. The nem has been in there for almost a month now and the clowns pay it no mind. They hover around it all the time (maybe because I placed the nem right where the clowns hang out under a little ledge) but they never accually host it.

I did alot of reading about Anemones before I bought one but one of the most important things I completely missed was the fact that BTA's dont host Ocellaris clowns in the wild. (at least thats what I read).

I am sure this question has been brought up here many times before so I am sorry in advance for a repeat question, but RC's search function has never worked since I've been a member...

One more thing I should point out. The clowns are somewhat large compared to the nem. They too are approx. 2".

Here is a pic.

The anemone is quite small. I have had lots of luck with green BTA and RBTA and false percs. I would say just give it some time.

Anemone is small. Are the clowns bred in capt.? I have read where people post a pic. of an anemone hosting a clown onto their aquarium, and then their fish copy the picture... Idk how good it works, but it is worth a try.

my false percs wouldn't come near my gbta.... my tomato swam right in though.. it's a hit or miss since in captivity they don't host those naturally only in captivity from what i've read and seen in my tanks

Not sure if they were captive bred or not. I bought them at Petco:confused: before I knew better...

Thats a pretty cool idea about the picture. I might have to try it.:D

when you guys say "false percs", are they the same as ocellaris?

It looks to me like it may just be too small for them to be fully compatible yet, but it does seem to me that they either really like the location, or are 'tending' it in some way. They may very well become more intimate as it grows. Give it time. Though it should be noted that captive bred/raised ocellaris are often not prone to host anything, or host nonsense things like a piece of plumbing so...shrug. BTA was your most likely to host choice though as far as good nem choices go.

Fatten up the nem w/ small (pinky nail size or smaller) pieces of raw shrimp every 4-5 days. Within a couple of months they will be all in it! It took mine a few weeks.

anemone is way to small to host those fish right now. i have a GBTA and my false percs prety much brought my anemone to the brink of death. gat substantially smaller and turned white. and mine was bigger than the one you have posted. if the nem is eating id concentrate on getiing the nem healthier and larger b4 you think of making it a host to a clownfish, much less a pair. they might be willing to host but basically, literally not enough room.

I've been rotating a half (or smaller) piece of raw scallop, and target feeding mysis shrimp every other day and it accually has fattened up since I put got it.
Is that enough or too much? bigger shrimp maybe?:)

I'd say that amount may be too much. With anem's primitive digestive track, it takes quite some time to digest pieces of food.
Scallop and mysis are very good for it, but i would give it a couple of more days in between. That being said, if your regiment is working, with positive results, by all means continue the course.

If they're from petco they're captive-bred.

Also, like everyone else is saying, that anemone is too small right now. Give it time, but even then it's hit or miss with these guys.

I have clowns which are hosting a florida condi anem, this is again another type that is not hosted in the wild. I did have them for about 6 months to a year before they hosted it, Once they started the anem had grown substantially like 5" base from the 2"
when I bought it. Give it time

yeah I have heard that too! Really kind of weird though!

Like others have mentioned, the anemone is too small, so be happy that the clowns aren't hosted by it -- there is a chance that they could kill it by "loving it to death" I have seen it happen in person.

It took nearly a year for my clowns to host my nem- like others have said, the anemone had to grow. Last month it split into three!

ok cool. Thanks for all the replies. At least I am on the right track then. I was wondering if I was feeding too much, but I've never seen it belch anything up save once, I saw mysis shrimp come back up. But that was only one time.;)

I will start every 3rd day and see what happens. He is gaining color so thats a good thing.:)

imo clowns and nems are very hit or miss, whatever happens in the wild happens naturally. Once you put them in a glass cube all bets are off. It may be a good thing they aren't hosting that nem as it is a little small. I have made the mistake of getting to small a nem for a pair of tomato clowns and they "hosted " it to death. Maybe once it grows a bit they will start responding to it.....or get a bigger nem.

I have two clowns that love my BTA. I have had them in the past and not been so fortunate. Like anything else in this hobby its on a case by case basis
