I was reading that the pistol shrimp only pair up with gobies from the genera Stonogobiops or Amblyeleotris. The orange spotted goby is from the genera Valencienna, so i was wondering if the pistol shrimp is species specific in its selection of a goby? Has anyone had a pistol shrimp pair up with an orange spot goby? Im a noob and dont have any experience with this at all.

Thanks

To my knowledge Valencienna species won't pair with pistol shrimp.

But pistol shrimp will also pair with gobies from the genus Cryptocentrus like for example the yellow watchman goby.

Some, but not all species of pistol shrimp are commensal. For example, Alpheus soror will not, Alpheus randall will.

Yeah, there are lots of pistol shrimp species in all oceans and climate zones and only a few of them will live with gobies, usually only the tropical species that live in relatively shallow waters on sandy areas.

Though I don't think this is a commensal relationship but rather a true symbiosis. In their natural environment both, shrimp and goby, rely on each other for survival.
