Snails shouldn't be dying from eating algae, something else is going on with your tank.

What size is it? And what are your current water parameters?

The local LFS used the word "PERFECT" except my calcium was at 300. He said amonia was zero as was nitrate and nitrite.

Sometimes I do feed the fish twice a day. I have now started back to just once a day.

I do have a $145 super pro water tester kit I have not used yet.
I'll break it out and post the results in this thread but I am going for a swim first before I do that.

i think 15 fish in a 55 gallon is too much personally, however others may disagree, i think you have serious parameter problems due to the fish waste and you have not got the set up to deal with it, hence the build up of nastys which is why the tank looked like a algae jungle, hopefully things will get better for you, also i wouldnt listen to your lfs, its very unlikely things are perfect if you are considering going down to the carwash to clean the rock, sorry if i sound like im giving you a hard time but i would love it if things worked out for you, i just think you need to consider your overal set up inachu, hope you have a nice swim

This is the only rock I will not touch since it seems to be doing ok.

Most self service car washes use fresh water. It would be a good idea to make sure though before you do that. You can blast them with hi pressure if you want but like somebody already said your going to loose your beneficial bacteria when you do it. Your going to have to recycle the rock. That's up to you if it's worth it to you or not.
All that being said I'm sure the rock would look great after you blasted it. But it would not necessarily eliminate hair algae if that's what your dealing with.

Nope no hair algae.
(whew!)

also thinking maybe I need a bigger skimmer.

i dont think you really have a proper biological filteration system, apart from afew ceramic rings theres not much happening, just had a look at your pics from april, theres not much rock in there so the primary biological filter is your canister, with the 15 fish you have i think it just crashed

Ok so I will throw out the dead rock and buy replacement rock and perhaps 5 more live rock.

I forgot how many live rocks I have. I think 6 or 8.

Ok I just did some tests using my new tester:

http://www.aznphotos.com/view.html?f=tester008lulm.jpg
My calcium is now in the normal range of 400 it was near 300 few days ago.

My phosphate is around 1.2 Is there any normal numerical value for phos? just wondering.

1.2 for phosphates?!?! ( what is the units of measure for that ? ) I would be very concerned if my read .5.

dunno.
Using the $139 testing kit the coloring said if the color matches such and such then it is meeting this numerical number.

maybe $139 is a rip off?

ok check this. i had some nasty looking rocks ( brown / black with algae ) and i wanted them dead. dead dead dead.

i tried vinigar.
didnt do squat
i got a brush
didnt do squat

got a 30 gallon rubbermaid tote filled with fresh ro/di water
added 1 gallon of bleach
added power head
5 hours later i had white rocks.

rinse well
let soak in fresh water with amquel over night
air dry a few days
rinse again
rinse again

congratz you now have base rock

sounds like to me you have some silicate and/or phosphate issues surprized at o nitrate expecialy using a canister filter or any other media , they are nothing but a nitrate trap. do a search on cooking live rock it will get the phosphates out, also make sure you are using ro/di water tap water is full of phosphates and silicates not to mention all the other junk they add to it

id suggets 60-70 pounds of quality live rock and 3-4 good powerheads pointing at it, this will become the main biological filteration system for your aquarium, use the 305 canister you have for running your carbon, and keep the phosban reactor for your rowa phos, its personal choice with skimming but i have mine set exactly at the very bottom of the cup and im dry skimming, it works best for me, the rock is expensive but once you have it itll last forever and your fish will probably live longer
