Will this die?

Hi so I have a fairley large hammer and when i was removing it from the plug only half lifted up and split down the middle. So will it die or what can I do to help it survive?

Is this a wall hammer or a branching hammer? If the latter, you should be able to break off the non-torn branches using a pair of large diameter cutters. If a head/polyp ripped in two, it is going to be difficult to save that particular polyp. An iodine dip (lugols soltion) may help.
