wood question

as most of you all know, im planning on building a new stand for my 150, i have set my mind on painting it piano black. question is, will it matter if i use cheap or more expensive wood plywood/trim if i paint a couple of coats of black then couple of coats of clear coat. want this stand to look professional and i worry that cheap wood will not look as good, but like to save money anywhere i can. might buy some sample pieces of different type of wood and paint black to see what it looks like. talking to rhett, he had a good point about salt creep and water spots showing easier on black, but i like the way it looks. any thoughts or comments will help alot.
thanks
greg

I used oak plywood to make a canopy to match my black solid oak stand, I can't tell the difference. If I was to build one right now to paint black, I would use poplar most likely. I understand Cypress is the way to go for moisture applications. Also, there's a paint called marine spar you could look into using.
