Ok now that I have your attention I am thinking of undertaking a wooden tank project. I think I am going to have to convince my wife some more but so far I want to say thanks to "dsandfort" and "KWReefer" without their posts I can say that there would be no way she would allow me to do it.
That being said I have another problem I want a 10 foot tank and all the home builds I seem to find are for 8 footers. Is there some major problem with going bigger/longer? My ultimate plan would be 120x40x30. I planned on 3/4 plywood with 2x4 bracing with an overflow just like "dsandfort" tons of epoxy and fiberglass and then taking it to my friend who runs the local
LineX shop just to be sure everything is water tight. I don't think there is anyway to build this without center braceing but would love to go without so there are no shadows. I have no idea what thickness glass or acrylic I would need so suggestions are welcome.
I currently have a 280 gallon 72x30x30 and never thought when I got a Vlamingi Tang that it would be to small for this guy. Before that Tang Police get on me I assumed he would be more than happy in my tank. I only have 265 pounds of live rock which leaves plenty of swimming room. I figured that a fish that can get 2 feet in the wild would not grow more than about 16 inches or so in a tank. Also that it would take several years before he was even close to that size. I was mistaken I have only had my Vlamingi for about 18 months and he has grown from less than 3 inches to more than a foot in that time. I want to do the right thing and can't even think about giving him to another reefer with a larger tank, he is my pride and joy. He is not growing quite as fast and still has plenty of room but I know he would be happier in a larger system.
I will say this in closing I am open to any suggestions anyone may have. I especially hope to hear from the two I mentioned above and any others who have undertaken similar projects. I joined this site a while ago but never posted anything because I broke down my tank right after I joined. I set my tank back up fish only and have only recently gotten back into the reef idea. I sure did miss out on a lot of knowledge while not taking advantage of this site and will not be make that mistake again. One last note I got a price quote from tenecor to manufacture this tank in Acrylic for me at the great price of $4000.00 delivered, should I just pay them and not deal with the hassle?
