I put a new Wood's polyp frag in my tank 48 hours ago. It opened right away and looked beautiful and happy and I spent most of yesterday enjoying watching the different fronds swaying around and it changing which ones were out and which were in. There are 7 heads and there were almost always at least 4 fully extended.
This morning when I checked the tank it was moved over a couple inches and smunched up against the side of a rock upside down. I don't think the flow could have done this, although the bit of rock it is on is very small.
The possible culprits? I have no fish, all corals are small frags and none closer than 8 inches. I do have mexican red leg crabs, snails and a bristle worm that is about 6 inches long.
I kind of suspect the bristle worm, but have heard that the info saying they are not reef safe is out dated and they are good guys.
I can't imagine it was a crab. They are so small. But the bristle worm hasn't bothered any other frags. In fact none of my other frags have been messed with, ever.
Guess my other corals heard me say too many times yesterday that it is my new favorite.............?
Anyway, now the polyp is all sucked up inside itself, looks a little torn up, and has not come out all day. In fact, I am afraid maybe it is dead. (Took a water sample to the LFS and they checked everything. Ph was a little high, but not terrible. Everything else good.)
Do you guys think it will recover, and what do you think possibly happened? Crabs? Bristle Worm? Snails? Current? Other?
