WooHoo!! I have babies

You could have two females, but from our experience normally you can't tell the male by the jaw until he has held a clutch or is clutching.

Hi Rian,

Thanks for the info... It would just seem that the pair would have done their thing by now if they were mated considering Kim has had hers for a year and they have been through this six times...

I see you are in Davis as well. I live in Sac and work in Davis...

For any members interested in breeding Bangaii Cardinals (or those who have already bred them), Frank Marini will be our guest speaker for the month of June. For many years Frank has been publishing valuable info on breeding and raising marine ornamentals, primarily the Bangaii Cardinals. He's also the moderator here at Reef Central on the FISH BREEDING FORUM. June's meeting starts at 7:00, Friday the 16th. We're at the Roundtable Pizza, 9500 Greenback Lane, Folsom CA 95630 (actually closer to the Madison Ave. side of the shoping center) near ACE Hardware.

Oh, man. That Friday is my step daughters high school graduation! That stinks. I really want to go. What time does the speaker usually start?

Do you know what your going to do with the babies once they mature? If you decide to sell I know I may be interested in one, and a lot of other members would probally be too.

I will definitely want to sell them. Hopefully, most will survive. I will let everyone know when they are ready.

Hey,
I just wanted to share some photos of the babies at 2 weeks. All 11 are still going strong. I have been feeding them bbs which are fed with phyto and selcon. They seem to be doing well so far.

awesome Job kim-
The banggers (my term for baby banggais) look great.
The key to success w/ these guys is enriched BBS, and your doing the right thing. Phyto and selco is more than sufficient. Have you started your wean onto prepared foods?
I like shaved shrimp mixed w/ in dimishing portions of live BBS, or try cyclopeeze and or PE mysis

Someone posted a quote from an old article on sexing these fish.
Well 10yrs later, i have concluded and its been recently published by Vagelli et al. Thats you cannot sex these fish accurately, and unfortunately they are fixed sexes at birth

Hey Frank,
I haven't tried any shaved shrimp. Do you think it is time? I will get some this weekend and give it a try. Thanks!

We have just had a very small batch of babies as well.. Ours are in our display with the parents.. how long is it safe to leave them in there before sexual aggression starts to kick in? the parents are not paying much attention to the little ones but from what I just read .. that will change??

From my experience, I've seen the parents eat the babies, since it is a small enought thing to fit in their mouths. They don't start to mature for months, maybe 3-5 months so if you want to keep them in there you can. I've even seen larger babies eat smaller babies before.

These babies are ready to go to new homes. Been eating frozen for about 3 weeks now. Let me know if you are interested . . .

I think that is so neat Kim. I would love to have some for my 30, but I think I dont have enough room and my current swimmers might just be a lil too pushy for em.

Hi Justin,
What do you already have in there? They say 20 gallons is enough - they don't swim around a lot. Mine have never been in a tank that size, but they are in with tangs, foxface, six-line, anthias, etc. They can hold their own really well. You just don't want it too crowded. I will be at the meeting tomorrow if you change your mind. :)

Hey Kim, How much are you asking ? Also, from what I've read, the best way to get a pair is to get a group of babies and wait and see if they pair off....right ? Do they do ok on their own or are they better in a group ? I'd like 2, but don't know if its worth taking a chance that I end up with 2 males/females.
Are you available this weekend ?
LMK

I have a pink skunk, six line, and flame angel. The three amigos :D
Im just thinking these guys would do better in a school of 3 at least, that I know would make it too crowded within a couple months. Im on the fence with this one, just not sure. I kinda felt that I was pushing it squeezing the flame angel in with the other two, but everyone gets along great.Just scared of breaking up the dynamics.

Shilo - They will pair up on their own. As of yet I have not noticed any pairing of these babies. I am asking $20 for one or $15 each for 2 or more. I will be around this weekend if you would like to take a look. Also, you could get a few, wait for them to pair and then take the others out. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find homes - I could maybe work something out with you.

Justin - Yeah, I hear ya about the dynamics. I believe that these guys are fine with just one in a tank. But it sounds like you are pretty full up. Time to start another tank!!!
