I noticed this creature about a week ago after lights out. Initially, it looked like a pencil lead protruding from the rock straight into the sand, any change in light would send it shooting back into the rock at lightening speed. Last night we finally saw the head, or end that eats, it poked up out of the sand and was ingesting grains of sand from the surface.
When it's stretched out the girth is the size of a pencil lead, the mouth is at the tip, it's deep brown/black with a tan or beige ring every centimeter/half inch or so. Although, when we saw it sorta fanning around looking for food last night, it seems the rings got closer together as it extended and retracted.
