Worst Investments You've Made in the Hobby.

Getting too big of a tank...Cost get out of hand...Wound up getting out of hobby because of cost and too much work.
Got back into hobby and got a 30 Cardiff and got the best equip I can because of the small tank and am now able to manage it all.

I can relate...big tanks are hard to sell and get out of. I think big tanks should only be considered if you do not plan to move or tear down...ever.

I haven't made horrible investments equipment wise due to 2 awesome LFS I shop at. However, livestock wise I have. I would usually buy my livestock from Big Al's and not those two other stores before due to the fish being cheaper. What I didn't know was that these stores usually got the more sub par fish/sick fish and so the only reason they survived in their tanks was cause they would heavily medicate their systems with copper etc. These fish carried Marine Ich, Marine velvet, Brooklynella. Which means my tank with none of the medications equals dead fish in a month or less. I couldn't understand why I was losing fish so fast. I even started to quarantine fish but they would die from bacterial/fungal diseases like popeye.

I left my tank fish less for 8 weeks and after started to buy fish from the other two stores and fellow reefers. Haven't lost any fish or livestock of inverts after that. One of the store owners of the 2 awesome LFS told me he purchases the most healthy and lively fish. He also doesn't medicate tanks and believes that stress free environments are best for fish and key to fighting diseases.

Moral of the story, don't buy cheap, get the vary best in this hobby.

Worst thing I ever bought...used equipment and tanks.

Just speaking in general, I have bought so much used stuff over the years I'm just sick of getting other people's dirt. I cannot count how many times I have bought stuff that was just filthy. Pet peeve of mine is when people do not accurately describe their items and then even worse they don't have the decency to clean it up. UGH>!

I try to stay away from other people's problems these days and save myself the headache by just buying new.

I have had pretty good luck... but some people do give me the filthiest used equipment.... luckily I do not mind soaking them and watching them turn new haha. especially if it is a cheap buy due to the disgusting buildup/funk on them.

Worst investment for me was the 125 gallon reef set up off of CL last July. I tore it down completely 2 months later to replace the broken base frame. Redid most of the set up because I had major HA issues. Well I am done with that set up.

Now I will be setting up a 120 or 150 XH, depending on what I find a deal on. Setting this system up the right way.

when i first got into the hobby, i was buying small, 1 to 2 lb pieces of live rock covered in aptasia.. i thought i was getting free corals... lol

Fiscally... Going LED and realizing they weren't for me. Lost my butt on selling my Sol Blues and my Radions. I'm sticking with traditional lighting for the foreseeable future.

red sea pizim delux
crushed coral
cheap high voltage ato (shocked me after a couple months)
cheap magnetic algae scraper for acrylic from petsmart (scratch on first use)

2004 chevy s-10 zr5
my house

sorry about the last two, i couldn't resist.

Not listening to all the advise to not buy cheap in the beginning. Then over time realizing that everyone else was right and then the painful process of spending more money to replace what I had already bought with quality products.

A pair of small peppermint shrimp to handle a couple of aptasia that popped up in the tank. Unfortunately they didn't have a chance to eat the aptasia as my watchman goby gobbled up both of them within 2 days. Not an expensive mistake, but really annoying.

I'm now debating whether I want to try another peppermint, but the biggest one I can find. Maybe the watchman would leave him alone if he's big enough.
