It's a sad day when you can't even go to the nearst fish store to get simple items such as food and snails.

IMO, Tampa Bay Aquarium is the worst store in the Tampa Bay area.

Why?

1) Quality of livestock is exceptionally poor. Everytime I have stopped by there dead fish abound. The majority of the fish are suffering from some sort of ailment. The most useful service they provide in terms of livestock is the opportunity to view first hand any disease, pathogen, parasite, fungus, etc., so you can give a proper diagnosis if the need should arise.

2) Selection of corals is exceptionally poor. They're store slogan should be, "You name it, we ain't got it." They do have a rather large selection of host anemones; however, most are either bleached or the extremely aggressive, sticky, fish gobbling carpet variety.

3) Selection of drygoods is exceptionally limited. The best way to sum this category up would be generic and bare bones.

4) The knowledge of the staff is of zero value. I don't include hotreefer in this b/c he does not have a conflict of interest to sell you everything you need and utter propaganda such as flame angels are 100 % reef safe. On one occassion a wrasse was on his death dead being picked upon by a yellow vulcher tang and a customer asked what was going on. The owner responded that's normal, wrasses lay on their sides. He also proclaims such propaganda that clams and corals must feed on my big bottles of DT's to live. and no he was not refering to small juvie clams, he was referring to a 6 inch gigas. They were not even competent enough to either tie a knot or wrap a rubber band at the end of a bag of snails. Luckily I caught this blunder and prevented a spill.

"I know all the tricks of the trade," said Barry.

You are opening up a can of worms with this topic.
While you are entitled to your opinion and the right to post it. This thread will start a LONG rant from alot of people.
Just my 2 cents.
Sorry about your experience with them. You might try ITCHY stuff in Oldsmar.

i also agree we have been down this road way to many times
i always say if i dont like a store i just dont go and leave it at that .

Oh no, not again.
Allthough I found your description very humerous(yet scary) its realy not a good idea to rekindle this fire!
your realy good at creating a mental image with words (i guess being a motivational speaker has benifits) and i found myself chuckling, but i digress I have never been to this LFS so i realy cant comment on it but I think every store has bad times as well as good times and I wouldnt black flag them for one "bad" visit.
As far as starting a poll on bad LFS,.... wow, no way. I might be a bit touched in the head but im not gonna get anywhere near that one!!! no way! I have seen too many mud slinging, name calling fire fights on that ugly subject! but as you wish. it is a free country.

Just a quick jump in here...

Because Barry's store name and my company name are a little similar.

It has not been mentioned here yet but, lets be crystal clear here, (for my sake) Tampa Aquarium Service ( that's me ) is not friendly or associated in any way with Barry the owner of the store this thread is about.

By the way Barry was one of a string of owners of Creative Oceans. 2 or 3 owners ago.

Hopefully this will avoid someone thinking badly of my company. :) I'm assuming before the mods kill this thread it will just plummet from here.

i can vouch for john, tampa bay aquarium's name is creative oceans (the old name of finz) theres a big sign ont he window that says creative oceans

No you guys are confused. Barry used to own Creative Oceans. His corporate name is Tampa Bay Aquarium Supply. I'm like 99% sure of this because many times at different wholesale suppliers they think my company and his are the same. He sold Creative Oceans to a guy named Jarius (spelling?) short little shaved head dude that always wore a tennis visor, who then sold out to Chris P. Who changed the name to FINZ.

In the mean time ole Barry jumped back into the fire and opened a store in north tampa on Bearss Ave.

Ah i see, well, i've talked to him and i said that i personally thought people were confused with the name of the store cause the street sign says "tropical fish" and theres nothing really that is obvious that says the name of the store, he also just pointed at the front and said that the name was creative oceans *shrug* i dunno. I dont think his store is the best but i know a "particular LFS" is worse.

TBA ISNT FINZ OR THE OLD CREATIVE OCEANS,
TBA IS ON BEARSS & LIVINGSTON. UNLESS I MISSED SOMETHING U GUYS SAID. IF I DID I APPOLOGIZED

How about salt? The nearest store to me was selling Tropic Marin 300 gallon bags of salt for $150. That was a sad day (for them).

Needless to say, I went somewhere else.

ANGELSIL:

I USE THOSE 300 GAL BAGS OF TROPIC MARIN I WANTED PRO REEF BUT THEY DONT MAKE IT : (. I DON THINK THEY THAT HIGH.
WHAT STORE WAS THAT?

Not gonna start mentioning names of stores and feed the trolls. I will say I live in Central Tampa, so that narrows it down a bit. To be honest, the bag was not marked and when I asked the price it started at $120 and then went up to $150 when they 'asked the manager'. Your mileage may vary and they may have sold you the same salt for 1/2 what I was quoted, which is why I fundamentally do not trust stores that don't mark products.

My point was that the nearest fish store is quite frequently not the best or least expensive. I wish it was!

PS. Those 300 gallon bags sell for $70 online. I expect a local store to have a markup for shipping and store overhead (etc), but $80 is a lot of markup for that product.

I HAVE ORDERED ONLINE ITS BOUT 30-35 IN SHIPPING I GOT 3 BAGS SO SHIPPING WENT DOWN. 120 WOULD BE BAD I PAY EXTRA 20 IF THEY HAD IT IN STOCK U KNOW DONT HAVE TO WAIT FOR IT. I SEE WHAT U SAY.

so my qusetion is what do people have against petmart

there livesock might not be the healthiest although they always do have alot. There selection of drygoods is huge

they might not be the best store but i wouldnt say they are the worst
