Would a sump take 2 different hose sizes?

I wanted to get this sump set up this weekend, but the vendor is not replying to my e-mails.

The overflow appears to take a 1.25" - 1.50" tube INTO the sump. The return pump says right on the box that it takes 3/4" PVC or 5/8" flexible tubing for OUT of the sump.

Does this make sense?

Yep, that's about right from my admittedly brief experience. I just sat up my first sump a couple of months ago and had the same reservations. My tank is reef ready and has a 1.25 OD drain bulkhead and a .75 OD return bulkhead. So I guess it is fairly commonplace. I am sure others will confirm or deny to give more piece of mind.

Is there a bulkhead down low for the return pump? I am assuming it is an external pump since it takes tubing. The flow through the drains will be regulated by the return pump rate so 1.5" into sump will be fine w/ 3/4" return. Simply stated the water level will remain a fairly constant height in relation to the overflow. If more water is being drained than returned, flow will slow down or stop through the drain and vise versa. Where you could run into problems is if the return pump exceeds the capacity of the overflows.

The amount of water being pumped into the tank, and the amount of water draining to the sump are going to be equal. The water going into the tank is being pumped, while the water draining into the sump is by gravity. Typically the drain line to the sump is a few sizes larger than the return line to the tank.

Most commercially made sump tanks have 1.25" id tubing for the drain line, this size fits over 1" PVC pipe. For the most part return lines from a sump are 3/4" id tube.
