would a Tamron 70-300mm lens be any good for macro close ups?

great

great

great universal lense it will do the work of 3 lenses. BUT no it will not be good for very close up macro shots. I I have the sigma version of that lense. I did buy some maro close-up add-ons you can screw onto the lense for very close obljects, but it is only so so fo that. The lense is to slow. If the 18-55 lense is macro and fast you will have the best of both worlds.

the 18-55 is a tamron too. how do you tell if it is fast? I didnt know a 18-55 could be used for macro. can you explain for me? would the kit lens (18-55mm nikon) that comes with the d50 be used for macro..... well i mean close up pics of acros?

Don't do it! Buy a Canon instead. No but seriously, if you really want some good macros, I'd buy a dedicated macro lens. The Nikkor 105mm and Canon 100mm macro are probably the best dollar:fun lens.

I don't know if you're still in the position to but the above 'kit' or not, but the lens mentioned, the tamron 70-300 is a macro lens, with a 1:2 ratio, that means the 'closest' you can shoot will make the subject reproduce at 'half' size, which is actually very good (a true macro will shoot at a 1:1 ratio), I doubt if the 18-55 is any better than 1:4.
The tamron is a budget concious piece of glass, your edge to edge sharpness, especially towards aperature extremes will leave a little to be desired.

Yeah, I bought a used nikon d100 since that first post, although I might have an issue with the usb cable connection, and I love it. I might have to return , but the info on the lenses still helps. I have a little better understanding now from all the readind I crammed in before and after I purchased.
