Purchased a flower pot Goniopora. It was a beautiful shade of purple and white, after a couple of weeks the purple is fading out. The coral opens up still looks healthy but colour is not as great. Checked water conditions and everything looks good. Have it placed near the bottom of tank, low flow and good lighting. Have two other frags near it and they look good. Any help would be appreciated.:hmm2:

Are you feeding it? If not try to spot feed with a baster flow off. If its large use a 2 liter bottle cut off the bottom place over it feed in top of bottle and let it stay for about 10 to 20 minutes. Groniopora's are somewhat tuff to keep because they need the right place in the tank to open, feeding is needed but they ingest food very slowly and it has to be very fine food such as reefroids or oysterfeast. Also Iron and magnesium is important to them. I use Kent's iron and manganese about once every 2 weeks for mine and I only dose very low amounts into the tank. They are a beautiful coral but heavy on the maintenance side vs other LPS.. Also note if you are running LED or the store was running LED they can make some corals appear different colors I use a light that mimics both sun, and moon phases that runs 24 hours a day and during different times of the days my corals have some variations in colors due to the light channels ramping up and down.

This is a great article http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2005/10/aafeature2

It has a lot of great information on them as they were thought to be impossible to keep and honestly it's the first ever coral I bought and first one that died when I started into this hobby. At that point I have made it a mission to keep them now and have one of about every color under the sun in my tank and have been successful for the last 2 years with them. I have not lost any since I started feeding and dosing iron.

so it wont let me edit but to be clear something like a turkey baster with the power head flow off. I personally took a 10ml syringe that I had in a test kit. That way I know how much I am feeding and have my mixture correct as I mix 3 different foods with tank water to feed my corals.

Thanks for the info have started feeding with a syringe but watch most of the food disperse in the tank. Will try the pop bottle idea. I have led lights and have my goniopora on a rock at the bottom of my tank. Love the colour of these corals and hope to be able to have a large selection of them over time. Thanks again for the idea, just being new to the game I seem to go from one problem to another. L O L

yeah it happens then one day it just clicks once it does you will be able to anticipate the problem and correct before it becomes one.
