I have a 'sour apple' birdsnest that went from normal to awful looking overnight. I have an idea of what may have caused it but am looking for any other thoughts or opinions ..... either I'm on the right track or am missing something else?!
Yesterday evening I noticed that the pe of the 'sour apple' was less than normal. Everything else looked fine. This morning when lights came one the 'sour apple' looked absolutely awful ..... 3/4 of it had almost zero pe and what polyps are out have lost all color. All other corals, clams, anemone, inverts, fish etc are all looking and acting completely normal. No other signs of anything amiss in the tank.
Tank/water info from today's testing:
180 gallon dt. 40 gal fuge/sump.
Temp: 77
PH: 8.5
Nitrate: 10
Phosphate: 0
SG: 1.026
Calcium: 400
Mag: 1200
Ammonia: 0
The only "issue" in the tank was that yesterday morning there was a patch of cespitularia that had melted away and disappeared. This patch was in very close proximity alongside the 'sour apple'. My only idea of what has happened is that there was a toxin released that affected the 'sour apple'. I don't know why it would affect only that particular coral, but maybe just because of it's proximity and flow pattern?
I've done a 30 gallon water change and put in a fresh bag of chemi-pure .... and have been skimming wet today. Am mixing another batch of saltwater to change again tomorrow.
What do you think.....should I be looking at other reasons or doing anything else?
