Would my tank be suitable for RBTA?

Korrine

You could get a ticket!!
Hi,

Just reading about nems. My tank will be a 29g 30"x12"x18". I'll have a Koralia 2 (600gph) and will run a BakPak dual skimmer. Will 96 watts of lights be enough for a RBTA? They are pc's and have 2 50/50 and 2 daylight bulbs. Of course I wouldn't put a nem in until after quite a few months of adding fish and making sure it's stable. I'm just trying to plan.

Thanks for any input. Let me know if you need to know anything else.

Thanks again in advance

You might get varying suggestions about this, but I can say from experience, if you keep the BTA in the top half of a 29 gallon, you will have plenty of light--especially if you have all daylight, but even if you don't you will with the anemone in the top half of the tank. You can expect rapid growth and happy BTAs, either green or rose, with the lighting you're considering. I'm assuming you already have the light fixture/bulbs that you are mentioning. If not, you could get T-5 HO, which you could easily keep a BTA at the bottom of the tank, assuming the fixture has individual reflectors.

i already have the light and if this tank would not be suitable i'd pass on the nem as I'm not spending a whole lot of $ on this tank. Will be setting up a 120g next year sometime.

So looks promising :) Thanks.

I wouldn't bother right now personally, and just wait until you set up the 120. If you don't want to spend the money on the tank and spending 100$ an anemone and not having the right equipment might cause you to spend more than you want at this time. So I would say just wait.

I don't want a nem in my big tank. I'll have alot of other corals and such in there and would rather not risk it. So it's the 29g or nothing, I'm afraid.

Its not that hard to mix BTAs with corals, though they move a lot they have a very weak sting, and unless there in contact 24/7 its pretty rare for them to wipe out strong colonies of any coral, though rare, it isnt unheard of.

Hi Musho...you inspired me along with the gal that kept all the nems and clowns to check out the anemones. I'd rather not have one in my big tank at this point. Some of the guys at the last lrc meeting were just griping about there' splitting and trying to move around a bit. I'd rather keep one in the small tank.

ps. here in the frozen tundra  the temp is -5F and windchill is -36F

Korrine,

I've just recently asked the same Q. you're asking. I have a 29 aga with the same measurements as you have. I got a resounding "yes" that it's a fine tank for a nem (BTA).

I have a different light than you, mine is a 150wMH but it sounds like your light may be fine - I'll let others who know more answer that but if the light is fine..the tank size certainly is.

Good luck, looking forward to seeing it.

Oh and stay warm:D

Ok, thanks. May still try it :)

I'm going to have 2 250W MH on my big tank....it's also 24" tall. Maybe I'll upgrade my lights on the little later and then add one along w/other things then.

Personally I'm not sure a 29g is such a good long-term home for a bta...I've seen a few specimens reach 18+" across when fully expanded.

Although they do get large, their bioload is essentially zilch, so theoretically they could occupy most of the tank without issue.
