I was looking at my tank, as always, and I found some black sponge!! I've never seen black sponges as hitch hikers! I got quite a bit of it too! It looks EXACTLY like this pink sponge below, just black.

I just started my tank. Got a free dendro near dead head that I nurtured back to health (through my cycle even!) When I met a local reefer to get some sand to help seed my DSB, I got a tiny piece of black sponge on some rubble. I personally think the black sponges look the coolest.

Be careful with the black sponge I know a few people who lost whole systems to it. It can take over if not watched.

Yeah ... it's true about the Black sponge. They have this tough rubbery and smooth surface texture and they grow pretty fast too!!

What I would do is to peel them off any surface with my fingers as they come off in whatever size or shape they're formed. They're that tough. I do use some of them to act as "natural glue" to hold on to my coral base for 'scaping though.

Black sponge

I have the pictured sponge, bought a sm piece and now it is all over. Not your typical sponge though, as I have stated before, you could put it in a blender and then leave outside for 3 days in the rain and it would still come back. It was sold as a black sponge, but appears dark blue to me. If you want some PM and I would be happy to send you some, if you pay shipping.
