I place a thread about starting up a nano. The nano I purchased was set up before from previous owner. Its a JBJ nano and I just now saw the feed back on premium aquatics about the JBJ nano tanks cracking for no reason. O'boy what did I get into.I purchased the tank because the LFS sells the 24g for 300.00 and I thought I stoled it for 100.00 but now I am seeing the poor remarks and thinking I better not mess with it.Whats the feeling you guys have on the JBJ brand nano tanks. The way the JBJ tanks comes purchased, would it (lights, filtration) satisfy corals? Will I need a protien skimmer? The LFS has one set up with nothing special added to it and have corals and several small fish in it.Thanks.

the JBJ nano tanks cracking for no reason

well there has to be a reason.

I think i've seen that the bigger nanos (the 24g ones) have thicker/heavier glass or something, and the silicone seam alont the back wall and the glass is a poor bond or something like that....so with the weight of all the water, its pulling the glass away from the back i guess.

with the smaller ones (12 and 6 gallons) there's much less of an issue with that because they're not holding nearly as much water weight inside.

they have fixed the issue with the tanks cracking. the glass they used was messed up and the silicone had a bad component in it which caused it to seperate. they are good now though

There has to be a reason for the tank to crack, it just does not happen out of the blue. Maybe the tank was poorly shipped to you, maybe there was a rock leaning against the glass, maybe it was one of the older models that had a silicone issue but that has now been fixed. Could be a numerous number of reasons, it just does not crack out of the blue for no reason. I could not be more happier with my jbj nano cube dlx 12 gallon. One of the best nano's i have ever owned. There are no problems now with the jbj nano cubes, all have been fixed. And beware of the oceanic biocube aga have just bought oceanic and things could start to go down hill for them.

I stil think theyre crap, get a biocube by oceanic, a much more reliable name. [/

You deserved to be ****ed with your experience but I have 4 JBJ's with no problems. A friend just bought an oceanic thru the mail, set it up and its leaks! Your dealing with glass tanks and you can only imagine how they are handled by careless shippers. If you own the nano, its the best and if you own the aquapod, its the best assuming that neither has had problems. The biggest advantage to Oceanic is the extra gallonage and forget alleged customer service. If I could not get them to repond to emails for the most basic info, one mujst only assume their response to a problem would simply directing one to the seller.

the reason you cant get a response is that oceanic doesnt deal directly with consumers only retailers. even if u manage to get a response they will just direct you to contact either your nearest authorized dealer or if you are lucky a regional rep. This is the response i got to an email i sent simply asking for info on the bio-cube. If you order one from ebay and they arent authorized dealer you are pretty much S.O.L. for service or replacement.

The reason I think theyre crap is I had a 12 gallon crack for NO reason at all, just FYI

i agree with blue carpet. Things dont just break for no reason. There has to be a cause, wether it be the person who owns it's fault, or just a weak silicone.

Since you've already purchased it, you'll find out for yourself. If the glass pulls away from the back wall, i cant imagine that they'd be too hard to fix, unless the glass completely breaks.

Your welcome and don't forget to think of us next time you "billy" one of those criminal lowlife's!:p

Friend got a 12g JBJ. Filled it up, let it run. Went to work, came home, it was cracked all the way down one side with most of the water drained out of it. No rocks were in the tank, just water and sand. Hmmm.

my boss has a 24 jbj at work the first one cracked... they came out with the new model that was better but it cracked as well. Now NOTHING happens without a reason. The first one cracked from bad shipping and the second because of rockwork falling and hitting the glass.

I have owned a 12 jbj and a 24 jbj at work for over a year with no issues whatsoever. Both were fantastic tanks! I took the top off of the 24 and put on an aquamedic actinic/halide combo light. also with the jbj the prism skimmer fits perfectly in middle back chamber if you go with the aquamedic light and free the tank from the original light lid.

As much as I loved my jbj's i gave my 12 to a coworker who was interested in getting into the hobby and sold my 24 jbj to my boss so he could have a tank at home... I bought the new oceanic nano :) and yes... I love this tank as well. My aquamedic fits perfect as well as the prism skimmer.

there are lots of reasons glass tanks crack. I wonder how many of these 'cracked tank' stories involve the tank not being on a solid foundation? I remember when I had a 30 G long it was HIGHLY recommended that placement of a sheet of styrofoam under the tank would even out the stress level.

I am not saying JBL didn't have a problem, just adding there are other causes for cracks.

Just be sure your tank is on a flat strong surface.

You want to hear cracked Nanocube nightmares? Go to Nano-Reef.com. There are plenty there.
I didn't know about the problem before I bought my 24DX. After 10 months now and fully stocked with corals. I hope it stays intact as it is a pre updated model.
If I had known what I know now I would have bought an Oceanic
