Cool!

Now when one of my anemones split I think nothing much of it, but I can remember the first time my anemone split I was so buzzed out I was over the moon for a couple of days!

stupid question being a newbie and all but when they split what does that mean? and how do they split?

cant stress cause splitting too?

Yes it can. It is a defense type mechanism. Short version -- the conditions are poor, and it "thinks" that it is going to die, so it will split in the hopes that the clone will find better conditions.

(( I simplified this very much, and they don't think, but you get the idea ))

I hate to say it but, in a 30g tank, I can't beleive that a nem is "happy" or in an ideal environment to be splitting naturally. I do beleive hovever, that it is splitting out of stress.

In any event, congrats to you!

dang you guys really know how to bring a guy down:mad::thumbdown

well thanks to those guys who congradulated:celeb3: me:D:thumbsup:

now why isnt it possible that they cant be so satisfied with the conditions that they split twice...

so what does a happy BTA look like and do then

i have had a purple tip for over 1.7 years. its roughly 12" diameter, loves light and mild flow and once a week it gets the head guts of a silverside. its massive compared to ones ive seen, but ive never had it split.
SO, sorry to say i agree that the anemone is under stress in a 30G. if i were you, while they are healthy, them to your LFS and trade for salt or something. :) JMO!
JDM

i had a lt or ritteri it was kinda hard to tell...about 10in fully expanded...well it was in a 12gal eclipse tank and never split from stress...and those lights suck...this BTA is in the semi reef tank in my dads office with 4ish watts per gallon...instead of 9 or so for the entire tank

so isnt it possible that my tank is good enough for it to split

thats what i thought. after reading soooooooo many threads it had to do with stress and was a bad thing.

Grats on the split. Mine has split several times and now I have 6 btas. I wish it had stopped at 3 because I have no more space in my tank. My clowns love it but my other fish avoid them as they should. Never read or heard a split splitting again before it can heal. You could try posting in the Anemone and Clownfish forum.

Not that is is not possible for a happy Anemone to split, the sad fact is they typically only split when stressed...

Sorry for the let down but I have to agree that this is not a good sign.

Sudden water temperature swings can do this as well. In an effort to maintains its species, it is splitting in hopes one or more survive the current issue. Some breeders trigger splits like this on purpose. I prefer laceration myself.

I personally do not like anything under about 50G for these guys as they can foul the water pretty quickly when they discharge waste. I also find that "Species" tanks do much better than mixed.

And yes there will be a number of people that will take up arms on tank size or "species" only tanks but I have found that after a year or 2 most have lost the animal to "some issue" other than something that was their fault or an issue with their tank setup.

As far as how they look happy? that is hard to say, many that die looked just fine a week previous to their demise. Inflated, deflated really does not seem to matter a lot.

I think many are over fed and this contributes to tank fouling. I have a species tank and the Anemone gets fed maybe 1 time per month. Has never split and "appears" happily inflated during lights on hours.
