I "inherited" an established, stocked 75 gal tank. No one told me THIS was in there! Now I know why my little turbo snails were disappearing. I got lucky, only had to remove 60ish lbs of rock before I found it hiding! Too big and carniverous for my tank

tprize...thank you for "fixing" the picture...it's so nice when someone like you does that for us that have to settle for dial-up.

Looks like he might be related to thid guy I pulled out a few weeks ago. He also wiped out all my snails, and cleaner shrimp.

I pulled one out of my tank yesterday exactly the same.
I have had him for 5 years as i noticed him in the live rock when starting up.
Noticed him devouring a mexican turbo so that was it and in the sump he goes.

Where have I seen those red eyes before?

Dark Crystal, Garthim?

It is hard to tell because the photo is a bit blurry...but his claws look very flat-tipped (sort of like an Emerald crab's claws). If that is the case, it might be a relatively harmless crab.

Looked around internet and I think it's a form of Xanthid, red eye reef crab. It will eat anything meaty in the tank, some folks have lost healthy fish it seems. I'm keeping it for now in a nano, it's really fascinating!

Just keep a tight fitting lid on it. Crabs of that sort often decide to wander outside the tidepool to see what's next door.
