wrasscally wrasse

Hello all,

I just recieved my medium sized leopard wrasse today and acclimated him for a little over 2 hours with a drip. He then went through a crack in my LR and shook himself as I thought he was going to bury himself. a couple hours later I came by that spot and agitated the sand under the rocks by picking them up and running my fingers through and nothing was there...He probably moved to someplace different. My question is how long is the average time they normally stay buried before I can enjoy how gorgeous they make and addition to my tank. I have had this problem with a Carpenters Flasher and don't want to lose another fish. I have been in my room the entire time so I know he has not jumped out. I have read on forums like this through different posts that it could take anywhere from a couple hours to a couple of weeks before I see him reappear. Is this true? I have had a six line before and it never had a shy personality complex.

my yellow coris wrasse stayed under for a few days and never came out but after the 3rd day he would come out for like 30 minutes then dive back down and stay there all night and sometimes all day. He eventually got situated after a week or so and now he's out all the time except when it's night night time for him :) I was told that they will slowly start to dive less and less as the weeks go on and they are familiar with their new space. Nice fish you got there btw:)

Thanks Reefer..Lets just hope I didn't hurt him at all when moving the rock work around...Hopefully he comes out in the next few days

I'm sure he will. I did the same thing too and i thought i smashed him when i was pushing the rock back into the sand cuz i didn't see him for days but then he came out from a different location from where he originally dove. I'm sure he's just scared right now. Let me know if he comes out :)

:::::::::::UPDATE:::::::::::

I just got back from work a little while ago and right before my actinic lights turned off and my lunars came on I spotted my leopard wrasse come out of the sand, sit on the bottom for about 30 seconds and then go right back under the sand. So I am happy he is still alive, now I am just hoping he gets accustomed to the tank and comes out more during the day

Beautiful fish. The Leopard Wrasses are the best fish in my opinion.

How long has your tank been running (how mature)? Do you have a good population of pods...was that wrasse taking prepared food before you got him?

I have the same one (Macropharyngodon bipartitus), and many leopards in general, take several days to begin eating prepared food. It took mine about a week before eating. Keep your eye on him and make sure he is picking live food from your rock and food frequently until you see him taking prepared food.

Also, a good practice, as snorvich said do not disturb any of your buried wrasses.

Good luck and keep us posted.

My tank has been running for 2 years now and I have plenty of pods for him to eat. As far as taking prepared foods before I got him I am not sure about. I had ordered him from Dr. Fosters Live Aquaria... Now that he is out and about swimming around he is picking off my live sand and off my rocks constantly. Also when I fed mysis the yesterday he would pick some off and spiit some out but eat some at the same time..He seems to be picky but I am not going to complain as long as he is eating like he is.

Glad to hear your leopard came out for you. I wouldn't disturb the sand looking for her as this will just stress her more. If she won't eat the mysis very well try live brine and tiger pods. PE mysis is sometimes preferred over other brands.

Good luck with your leopard! They are beautiful fish.
