Wrasse from West Africa

The LFS told me that this wrasse was imported from West Africa but I can't find it's scientific name.

It's a juvenile Bodianus speciosus. I don't know why they sell this for the normal house aquarium, these fish get HUGE. Max size is 50+cm (that's 20+ inches). In addition, adult colors are not that attractive... More info here:

Agreed, I don't know why these make it into the trade. They're cute little juveniles, but they don't stay that size long. I'd venture to say only a few RC readers even have tanks the size necessary for these guys.

Thanks Luiz,you're like a marine fish encyclopedia. The adult is quite ugly and big so I won't buy it, just asking for it's name. BY the way, your picture is awesome!

My LFSs will frequently bring in speciosus hogs in their west african shipment. Each time as many as 20 to 30 pieces can come in. Luckily they always come in at very small size, just a bit over 1", and are very cute with the booberry colour. And i believe they will grow v slowly in a home aquarium, at least that's what i hope as hundreds have been sold here in my country and are now swimming in tanks less than 4' in length.

Luckily they always come in at very small size, just a bit over 1", and are very cute with the booberry colour. And i believe they will grow v slowly in a home aquarium, at least that's what i hope as hundreds have been sold here in my country and are now swimming in tanks less than 4' in length.

They are quite cute as juveniles but I don't want to keep them in small tanks.
