Hello,

can anyone tell me what type of fairy wrasse this is? And anything about their temperment. Thanks in advance for any help

Looks like a standard lubbocks fairy wrasse to me. I just got one as well and have not been to happy. He spends all day hiding except for 2 seconds when I am feeding. Hopefully that changes once he gets adjusted to the tank a little better, he's only been a resident for 2 weeks now.

Thanks for the help sedor, do you have a pic of yours? I tried to search for other images but didn't come up with anything similar

Looks like a Red Velvet wrasse (C. rubrisquamis) to me, personally. Not too sure about temper though, I've never kept one. I think I've heard they can be aggressive to some fish, but maybe not more than any individual fish can be aggressive.

Screwtape, thank you I believe you're correct. If anyone knows anything about their aggresivness with other fairy wrasses(and flashers) feel free to chime in.

NCSUsalt, C. Cyanopleura was my first thought, but the pattern isn't the same. ( although the colors are the same, they seem to be backwards)

it is just a variation within the species, i had one with the exact same color pattern before but he became aggressive towards my other fairy wrasses. if you google image you'll see both patterns. although i also see people sometimes say they are female solorensis, is definitely not rubrisquamis though, i currently have a male in my tank.

it is either going to be cyanopleura or solorensis

Ncsu, yeah I have a sub male red eye and it's also very agressive toward all fish but wrasses in general. Leaves my hog alone tho. I'm going to remove him soon and place him into a fowrl. Not a nice species IMO.

Well sounds like either way, it's not for my tank. It'll be staying at the LFS. Thanks for all the info

that would explain the aggression in mine then, i've always had the female fairys be mean little sobs. i had mine for 2 years with several male fairys of other species and never saw a change in color, if anything the colors became brighter like a "super" male hence the reason i thought mine couldn't be a female solorensis.

i say its a female solorensis too. i have one that is almost identical in my tank. she's never been aggresive at all though. she's never bothered anything in my tank. she is my only fairy wrasse though. IMO, a very beautiful fish!
