Wrasse in a barebottom

I have read that wrasse appreciate a sandbed and many bury themselves. Are there any wrasse that wouldn't mind not having a sandbed? I had a carpenters and it never seemed to bury itself or even hang out around the sand.

Wrasses of the genera Paracheilinus(flashers), Cirrhilabrus(fairys), Wetmorella(possums), Pseudocheilinus(lined wrasses), and Pseudocheilinops do not require a sand bed. All of the mentioned genera are reef safe, but Pseodocheilinus species can be pretty nasty once established.

Thanks. I was leaning towards fairy and flashers in this tank. I was considering the Melanurus and a McCosker's. I was eyeballing the clown fairy as well. I will probably settle on just 2.

That stinks. I do intend to research before buying. I knew some required a sandbed and didn't know if all of them would be happier with one. Thanks for the help

I have a handful of fairys and flashers in my current bb tank and I love them. My previous system had sand and my melanurus was one of my favorite wrasses. I found a new home for him when I switched to bb

I like the wrasse and would like to have a few. I see many require a tank as small as 50 gallons. My tank is a 40 breeder and I figure I can get away with throwing a couple of those in there.

Watch wrasses if you have shrimp. Mine had a very expensive dinner"¦ 2 peppermint shrimp.

I was so ****ed I got a small trout fishing hook, caught him and brought it to a LFS.

Oh wow. he definitely had a taste for them huh? I was thinking of having a cleaner shrimp and.maybe a peppermint if the aptasia ever showed up. Are there some wrasse that don't mess with them? I never saw my carpenters wrasse mess with anything. It it a flasher wrasse thing that they don't eat shrimp and such? I really would like to have a fairy wrasse, but not if they are going to do this.

Probably. My melarunus eats hermits and shrimp too. I have QT'd halicoreses wrasse like melarunus and iridis with a tupperware of sand and know people who keep a container of sand in their tanks for those wrasse that sleep in them.

I don't know if sand is going to be possible in my tank. I'm putting 2xjebao wp25 in it. 1 wp25 in my 29 will blow sand around on the lowest setting
