Wrasse in a barebottom

These will be going in a 40

Even then, you are limited to all but the smallest Fairy Wrasses (those that stay 3" or under, such as those in the Lubbocki complex; C. lubbocki, C. flavidorsalis, C. adornatus, & C. marjorie), but will be fine with basically any Flasher, Possum, or the Pink-Streaked Wrasse (Pseudocheilinops ataenia). Any Wrasse that Live Aquaria lists as 50 gallons minimum is more than likely not appropriate to house long term in a 40.

I fail to see the need for the extra ten gallons since the only difference is 3" in height. Consider this. A standard 50 gallon with a 4" sandbed will actually have 1" less height than a 40 barebottom. They both have the same footprint. So what's the difference?

See here for more details on all of the reef safe wrasses, their requirements, and on individual species.

Even if the C. filamentosus was small enough for a 40 (which I still wouldn't do), it is one of the most (if not the most) aggressive Fairy Wrasse. It needs to be avoided if you want other wrasses in the same tank. C. tonozukai is in the same family, with less of an attitude, but not one I would chance in a smaller tank. P. mccoskeri is a good choice. I would stick with the list I gave you for Fairy Wrasses though. The only others I would consider in a 3' tanks are from the Johnsoni complex (C. johnsoni, C. cf lanceolatus, C. lunatus, and C. squirei), but come with much higher price tags.
